Chipmakers Hint at Ease of Chip Supply Glut but Demand Recovery Still Slow

From Intel to Samsung, global chipmakers are celebrating the beginning of the end of a semiconductor supply glut, but the outlook for demand from customers outside the artificial intelligence (AI) industry remains gloomy.

All the major markets for chips — smartphones, PCs and data centres — have shrunk this year, as both corporate customers and consumers scale back spending amid a weak global economy, high inflation and rising interest rates.

This has created an unprecedented oversupply of commodity chips, causing a record combined KRW 15.2 trillion (nearly Rs. 98,650 crore) first-half operating loss for the world's two largest memory chipmakers, Samsung and SK Hynix

This glut, however, has started to ease largely due to production cuts and as a decline in PC shipments eased to 11 percent in the June quarter compared to a 30 percent slump in each of the previous two quarters, data from tech analysts Canalys showed.

The smartphone market is also improving, with cellphone shipments falling 8 percent in the June quarter, versus 14 percent in the first quarter, according to research firm Counterpoint.

"Demand is recovering very gradually," Woohyun Kim, chief financial officer at SK Hynix, said on an earnings call this week.

"The recent improvement in PC shipments has been mainly led by promotions and low-end models, meaning it provided limited impact on chip demand recovery," he said, adding that shipment forecasts for PCs and smartphones this year have been downgraded from earlier predictions.

While demand for chips to support generative AI has rapidly increased since OpenAI's ChatGPT was launched late last year, the sector still accounts for a small fraction of overall chip demand and is crimping corporate spending on servers, as some companies prioritize investment in AI.

Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger said on Thursday an inventory glut in server central processing units (CPUs) will persist until the second half of the year and that data centre chip sales will decline modestly in the third quarter before recovering in the fourth quarter. Intel shares rose 6.4 percent Friday after stronger than expected results.

A sluggish recovery in China, the world's biggest chip buyer, is also dampening the overall outlook.

Both Samsung and SK Hynix said China's reopening failed to live up to expectations that it would revive the smartphone market, and that they were extending production cuts of NAND memory chips, widely used in smartphones to store digital data.

Analog chipmaker Texas Instruments, which has heavy exposure to China, forecast third-quarter revenue and profit below Wall Street targets on Tuesday, bogged down by a sluggish recovery in end-market demand that has forced clients to cancel orders. Shares were up 1.5 percent Friday.

"China was roughly half of sales at the end of fiscal 2022, so China has the largest impact on TI's business," said Logan Purk, analyst at investment firm Edward Jones.

AI winners

Manufacturers of the equipment used to make chips such as KLA Corp and Lam Research are early winners of the AI boom. Both companies forecast quarterly revenue above Wall Street estimates this week. Shares were up 4.9 percent and 2.2 percent, respectively, on Friday.

"Advanced AI servers have significantly higher leading-edge logic, memory and storage content versus traditional servers, and every incremental 1 percent penetration of AI servers and data centres is expected to drive $1 billion (nearly Rs. 8,200 crore) to $1.5 billion (nearly Rs. 12, 330 crore) of additional (chip equipment) investment," Lam CEO Tim Archer said on a conference call with analysts.

Chipmakers are also increasing production of the high-end chips used to support AI related chips.

SK Hynix said demand for AI server memory had more than doubled in the second quarter compared to the first quarter. Its DRAM chips, which hold information from applications while the system is in use, sold for a higher price in the second quarter versus the first, on average.

The company leads the market in high bandwidth memory (HBM) DRAM used in generative AI. It had a 50 percent market share in HBM as of 2022, followed by Samsung's 40 percent and Micron's 10 percent, according to TrendForce.

Parliamentary Panel Suggests Setting Up Framework to Deal With Cyber Crimes

A parliamentary panel on Thursday expressed concern over mushrooming of cyber crimes and increasing data vulnerability, and suggested that the government should come out with a framework to deal with such risks.

The Standing Committee on Finance recommended setting up of Cyber Protection Authority (CPA) and advocated that the CPA engage ethical hackers to test ecosystem participants.

To enhance the prevention and detection of fraud in the banking sector, the committee headed by Jayant Sinha strongly suggested the establishment of a Central Negative Registry and that the CPA should maintain this registry.

Noting that current compensatory mechanism for victims of cybercrime in the financial sector has limited scope and coverage, the panel said financial institutions must play a supportive role as there is a fiduciary relationship between financial institutions and their customers.

The process of filing a compensation claim is complex and time-consuming, placing the burden of proof on the victims to establish the connection between the cyber crime incident and the resulting financial loss, which is particularly challenging due to the traceability issues associated with cyber crimes.

The committee strongly believes there should be an automatic compensation system as devised by RBI and it should be the financial institution's sole responsibility to immediately compensate the hapless customer, pending further investigation and final traceability of funds, the report said.

This proactive approach aligns with the principle of safeguarding customer interests and ensuring rapid resolution in cases of cybercrime in the financial sector, it said.

Observing that India is indisputably one of the best regulated and safest digital financial ecosystems in the world, the panel expressed concern over the mushrooming of cyber crimes and increasing data vulnerabilities even as digitisation has rapidly expanded across the country.

Within a few years, it is likely that a billion Indian citizens will be conducting hundreds of billions transactions online mediated entirely through large-scale, pervasive computer networks, systems, and algorithms, the panel said.

Simultaneously, it said, criminals are getting more and more innovative and difficult to track since they can now utilise powerful new technologies and operate in lightly policed or hostile jurisdictions.

These new and threatening technologies include generative artificial intelligence (Al), chatbots, and quantum computing, which raises the threat level exponentially.

To maintain its status as one of the world's best digital financial ecosystems, India should consider evolving its cyber security policy framework across five major dimensions to establish a more dynamic and proactive regulatory framework.

It should empower a centralized authority for cyber security which can work with all digital ecosystem participants in India and around the world; formulate fairer and more responsive consumer grievance redressal and compensation mechanisms: strengthen central and state cyber security enforcement capabilities; and achieve closer global cooperation with other leading countries.

Working simultaneously across all these 5 dimensions will ensure that India develops the world's most innovative, secure and resilient digital financial ecosystem.

The panel said cyber security regulations will have to evolve rapidly to take into account various technological developments and to stay ahead of bad actors.

There have been challenges in exerting sufficient control over third-party service providers, including Big Tech and Telecom companies on cyber security matters. Secondly, downtime in critical payment systems is able to disrupt customer services, which is not currently regulated.

Besides, it said, there is no clear process to either continuously whitelist or blacklist apps and maintain a central registry of apps that have the ability to tap digital payment and settlement systems.

"Today's regulatory frameworks are focused mostly on fire-fighting, but they need to be much more dynamic in anticipating and dealing with emerging threats and vulnerabilities of the digital financial ecosystem," it said.

Specific threats today include misuse of SMS templates, telemarketer verification lapses, insufficient maker-checker processes, weak security controls in fund transfer systems, and vulnerabilities in ATM channel communication.

The situation is exacerbated by limited coordination among different agencies and inadequate incident response as well as enforcement mechanisms.

The committee, therefore, to strengthen cyber security measures, mitigate vulnerabilities, and ensure the integrity of the financial sector's digital infrastructure recommended some concrete measures including regulation of service providers, maker-checker processes and ATM Channel security.

During the committee hearings, RBI provided evidence that Big Tech companies have refused to make various modifications to their mobile operating systems to make the OTP based two-factor authentication protocol even more secure.

It underlined the importance of the enforcement system in addressing cyber fraud and stressed the importance of local police to take effective action against cyber crimes.

The committee further said that promoting supervisory cooperation and knowledge exchange with global regulators will facilitate a collective response to the exponentially growing cyber threats.

The panel, therefore, strongly urged the government to adopt and go beyond global best practices — in short to develop 'next practices' based on India's specific needs and requirements.

Spotify Raises Premium Plans Prices Across Several Countries

Spotify Technology on Monday raised prices for its premium plans across several countries including the United States and United Kingdom, as the music-streaming company looks to boost profitability in an uncertain economy.

The move will result in a $1 (nearly Rs. 80) price increase for Spotify's US plans, with the premium single now starting at $10.99 (nearly Rs. 900), duo at $14.99 (nearly Rs. 1,230), family at $16.99 (nearly Rs. 1,390) and the student plan at $5.99 (nearly Rs. 490).

Spotify has moved in recent months to boost margins with hundreds of layoffs and a restructuring of the podcast unit, which it had built up with billions of dollars in investment.

The price increases come at a time when streaming services, both audio and video, are under rising investor pressure to boost profitability after years of prioritizing user growth.

Rivals services from Apple and Amazon.com and Tidal have all increased prices this year, while YouTube also hiked prices last week on its monthly and annual premium plans in the US for the first time since the subscription service was launched in 2018.

Spotify, which had indicated in April that it would raise prices in 2023, had also raised prices in 46 countries last year.

The Sweden-based company is due to report its results for the second quarter on Tuesday.

In India, Spotify Premium costs Premium Mini at just Rs. 7 per day, however it is only a one-time plan which can only connect a single mobile device at once. Other plans include the Premium Individual plan at Rs. 119 per month, Premium Duo at Rs. 149 per month and Premium Family at just Rs. 179 monthly. All these three plans come with one month free trial.

Google to Pay $338.7 Million in Damages Over Chromecast Patent Case, Rules US Jury

Alphabet's Google violated a software developer's patent rights with its remote-streaming technology and must pay $338.7 million (nearly Rs. 2,770 crore) in damages, a federal jury in Waco, Texas decided on Friday.

The jury found that Google's Chromecast and other devices infringe patents owned by Touchstream Technologies related to streaming videos from one screen to another, a court representative said on Monday.

Google spokesperson Jose Castaneda said on Monday that the company will appeal the verdict and has "always developed technology independently and competed on the merits of our ideas."

Attorneys for New York-based Touchstream did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Monday.

Touchstream, which also does business as Shodogg, said in its 2021 lawsuit that founder David Strober invented technology in 2010 to "move" videos from a small device like a smartphone to a larger device like a television.

According to the complaint, Google met with Touchstream about its technology in December 2011 but said it was not interested two months later. Google introduced its Chromecast media-streaming devices in 2013.

Touchstream said that Google's Chromecast copied its innovations and infringed three of its patents. It also said its patents were infringed by Google's Home and Nest smart speakers and third-party televisions and speakers with Chromecast capabilities.

Google denied infringing Touchstream's rights and argued that the patents are invalid.

Touchstream filed similar complaints against cable providers Comcast, Charter and Altice in Texas earlier this year. Those cases are still pending.

Xiaomi to Bet Big on Under Rs. 15,000 Device Segment to Regain Lost Market Share

Smartphone maker Xiaomi is betting big on the Rs. 10,000-Rs. 15,000 device segment to regain its lost market share, a senior official of the company said on Friday.

Xiaomi India President, Muralikrishnan B said that the company has come up with a reset strategy and will focus to be "India's most loved and trusted smartphones" and IoT brand with "focus on efficiency and sustainability with a secure foundation." He said that Xiaomi will operate with a leaner product portfolio and focus on democratising 5G in the country.

"Today most of the 5G devices that are being sold are above Rs. 20,000. There is an increase in penetration in Rs. 15,000-Rs. 20,000 but mass of the market, the belly of the market is going to be in Rs. 10,000-Rs. 15,000 where there is a clear opportunity for Xiaomi to replicate what we did with 4G and recreate that 5G magic," Muralikrishnan said.

According to Counterpoint Research, the Rs. 10,000-Rs. 20,000 price segment had recorded the steepest decline of 34 percent on a year-over-year basis in the March 2023 quarter while smartphones priced above Rs. 45,000 recorded the highest growth of 66 percent.

Muralikrishnan said that the company has been selling smartphones in the price range of Rs. 15,000-Rs. 30,000 as well and the response to the company's devices in the Rs. 10,000-Rs. 15,000 bracket makes it confident to focus on the segment. "Redmi Note 10T 5G, Redmi Note 11T 5G and Redmi 11 Prime 5G which have done exceedingly which gives us confidence that this is the right segment to target for 5G. We will stay true to what Xiaomi is known for, which is a product with the best of specs, the highest quality and honest pricing," he said.

According to market analysts, Xiaomi has recorded a decline in shipments for the last four consecutive quarters.

In the March 2022 quarter, Xiaomi shipments declined by 44 percent on a YoY basis and the company slipped to third position with 16 percent market share, according to Counterpoint Research.

Muralikrishnan said that the company will now grow offline retail reach to boost its business.

He said there will be a razor-sharp focus on not just expanding our distribution reach but also building strong retail capabilities that can help sustain this growth for the long term.

The company plans to double sales promoters at retail stores from 4,000 at present to over 8000 by the end of this year, Muralikrishnan said.

Toyota Plans to Use Regenerative Fuel Cell Technology for Manned Lunar Rover

Toyota Motor plans to use regenerative fuel cell technology to power a manned lunar rover, executives said on Friday, raising the prospect of eventually using the moon's water ice as an energy source in the future.

Japan has stepped up its space ambitions under Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

It is participating in NASA's Artemis programme and plans to have an astronaut at a lunar space station called Gateway as part of that in the latter half of the 2020's.

Toyota has teamed up with Japan's space agency since 2019 to develop the manned lunar rover — which it dubbed the Lunar Cruiser — that they hope can be put on the moon in 2029.

"In order to conduct long-term and stable research on the surface of the moon, we are aiming to source various items on site over a long period," said Ken Yamashita, head of lunar exploration projects at Toyota.

NASA expects Japan to provide a lunar rover with a 2029 target launch date as a contribution to the Artemis programme, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency said in presentation materials on Friday.

A fuel cell vehicle uses an electric motor like an electric vehicle but draws power from a fuel stack where hydrogen is separated by a catalyst to produce electricity.

Toyota said its technology will utilise solar energy and water to produce hydrogen and oxygen through electrolysis during daylight hours, and the fuel cells to supply electricity during the night.

A lunar night lasts about 14 earth days, so with help of the technology the lunar rover would be able to ride for many days at a stretch even when it is dark and extremely cold

The world's largest automaker by sales hopes to secure an order for the manned lunar rover by autumn of next year. The vehicle is expected to be able to carry two astronauts for 42 days a year on mission and stay in operation for 10 years, it said.

"Our idea is to continue with the lunar rover longer than those 10 years if there's a company or arrangement that can supply the water needed for that," Yamashita said, adding that clean water will initially have to be sent into space with it.

Toyota is not expecting it will be able to generate water usable for fuel cells from the moon's ice water or be capable of mining it by itself, Yamashita cautioned, saying it would likely rely on other companies or future developments for that.

Oppenheimer Expected to Perform Better Than Barbie at Indian Box Office, Say Analysts

Oppenheimer and Barbie will continue the momentum built by Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One at the Indian box office, say trade experts, predicting that the two Hollywood movies releasing Friday will collectively amass around Rs. 45 crore in the opening weekend.

In the duel between two major Hollywood titles, Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer, a sprawling biographical drama on the titular American theoretical physicist played by Cillian Murphy, is expected to do better numbers than Barbie, a live-action film on the world-famous Mattel doll from actor-director Greta Gerwig, they said.

Gautam Dutta, PVR INOX Ltd co-CEO, credited Tom Cruise's Dead Reckoning Part One for giving a blockbuster start to the second half of 2023.

“The whole trend started with Mission: Impossible. It was released on Wednesday and the weekend was colossal... The whole momentum got created with that. This month also sees a huge opening of Oppenheimer and Barbie. This is by far the most positive news because people are flocking back to cinemas.

"We are expecting an industry-wide opening day gross box office collection of Rs. 7 crore for Oppenheimer and Rs. 4 crore for Barbie. The first weekend (Friday–Sunday) collection could be around Rs. 30 crore for Oppenheimer and Rs. 15 crore for Barbie," Dutta told PTI.

Dead Reckoning Part One, the seventh film in Cruise's spy action franchise Mission: Impossible that hit Indian screens on July 12, reportedly raised Rs. 50 crore in the first five days of its release.

Its maker Paramount Pictures India claimed the movie has registered the "biggest opening day and opening weekend" for the franchise, Cruise, and the studio in the country.

Dutta said over 8.5 lakh people and about 9 lakh saw Dead Reckoning Part One on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

For Oppenheimer, the PVR INOX executive said, the multiplex chain has sold "close to 1.5 lakh tickets already for a single day for Friday, and for the weekend, it's clocking about 4 lakh".

"Barbie, as well, is trending a little below Oppenheimer because it caters to a slightly different audience," he added.

Ashish Saksena, COO – Cinemas, online ticketing platform BookMyShow, said July has been a "crackling month" at the cinemas with three back-to-back Hollywood titles releasing in little less than 10 days. "It's especially heartening that Hollywood films have been doing so well. Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One set the tempo, followed by the most anticipated box-office duel between Oppenheimer and Barbie.

"Both films continue to pick pace, as we get closer to the release date. While both the films are creating a buzz worldwide, Nolan's Oppenheimer has started off on a very impressive note in India, as advance sales for the film in IMAX screens opened up much earlier than usual, therefore naturally taking the lead in sales," Saksena said in a statement. According to the senior executive, the film has crossed over 3 lakh tickets in sales on BookMyShow, since advance booking went live three weeks ago.

Since Oppenheimer will be the only release on IMAX screens this week, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Delhi-NCR, and Chennai are in the lead for most ticket sales on the platform, he said. Forty-two per cent of tickets for Oppenheimer booked on BookMyShow have been for immersive cinematic formats, specifically the IMAX format, Saksena added.

Echoing his sentiment, Dutta said IMAX screens for Nolan's latest film are "all packed across the board". "This is not just a region-specific trend. All the weekends are already gone," he added.

Barbie, led by Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, is drawing audiences, especially the youth, to the theatres, observed Saksena. "The film has already crossed 54,000 tickets sold on BookMyShow with Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi-NCR, Chennai, and Kolkata in the lead as bookings continue to open across other screens and theatres across India," he further said.

According to the ticketing platform, eight per cent of the people have booked tickets for both Oppenheimer and Barbie, with most of them opting to watch the films on the same day.

"In fact, we have also witnessed 22 per cent of transactors for Oppenheimer having watched Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One just recently, further reiterating a strong audience following for quality Hollywood spectacles on the silver screen," Saksena said.

"We are optimistic that these two films are set to welcome hordes of consumers to the theatres across formats for the ultimate big-screen experience," he added.

Trade analyst Komal Nahta hopes the excitement in cinema halls continues this week with Oppenheimer and Barbie. "The craze of both the films is immense, but they can't be expected to do the Mission: Impossible figures because it was a mass film. Christopher Nolan is a class director and Barbie is not being released in Hindi.

“Mission: Impossible has mass appeal as well as was dubbed in Hindi. Having said that, the figures will be big. It's good that there are no Bollywood films releasing in cinemas, except Ajmer 92, which is a small film. If there was a major film, then there would have been a competition," Nahta told PTI. According to Nahta, Avatar: The Way of Water and Fast X were the last tentpole Hollywood films that performed well at the Indian box office.

James Cameron's The Way of Water, which was released in December 2022, reportedly collected over Rs. 100 crore in the first weekend, while Vin Diesel-led Fast X landed in theatres in May this year and earned Rs. 61 crore in the first three days.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5, Watch 6 Series Pre-Order Offers Tipped; Samsung Teases Upcoming Galaxy Watch Features

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Watch 6 series pre-order deals have been leaked online, days ahead of the company's next launch event. The second Galaxy Unpacked event of 2023 will be held in South Korea and the firm is expected to unveil new foldable phones, a new tablet and smartwatch series, and a new pair of true wireless stereo (TWS) earbuds. Meanwhile, Samsung has unveiled new software features coming to existing and upcoming smartwatch models, including a new temperature app and support for displaying tickets and passes.

Tipster Evan Blass recently posted details of the upcoming Galaxy Watch 6 and Watch 6 Classic (via GSMArena) to Threads, revealing that customers who pre-order the next generation smartwatches from Samsung will get a fabric band at no additional cost. Samsung is yet to officially reveal details of the Watch 6 and Watch 6 Classic pricing and availability. Meanwhile, Blass' post stated that customers who pre-book the Galaxy Z Flip 5 will receive an upgrade with double the storage capacity at no extra cost.

With only a few days to go before Samsung's next Galaxy Unpacked event — scheduled to take place in South Korea for the first time on July 26 — the company has begun to reveal some of the new features it is bringing to existing models and its upcoming wearable devices.

This year, Samsung Wallet is coming to Galaxy Watch models with support for making payments, display identity cards, and quickly access tickets for shows without unlocking their smartphone. Meanwhile, a new Thermo Check app for the Galaxy Watch 6 and Galaxy Watch 5 series will allow users to check the temperature of different objects and locations such as their meals, or water in a swimming pool — without any contact. The app will utilise the temperature sensor on their Galaxy Watch, according to the company.

Finally, Samsung has also confirmed that the Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 5 series will also support WhatsApp's new smartwatch app. Released by the Meta-owned messaging service on Wednesday, WhatsApp for Wear OS allows users to continue conversations, send voice messages, and take calls using the smartwatch on their wrist.

Microsoft Asks London Court for Two-Month Pause of Appeal Over Activision Deal

Microsoft on Monday asked a London tribunal to pause its appeal against Britain's block on its $69 billion (nearly Rs. 5,66,100 crore) takeover of Activision Blizzard to give the parties more time to resolve the dispute.

Britain's competition regulator, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), in April became the first major regulator to block the acquisition of the Call of Duty maker, citing concerns about the impact on competition in cloud gaming.

The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has also opposed the tie-up, but suffered a major defeat last week when a federal court rejected the FTC's application to temporarily halt the deal.

In Britain, the CMA's final report is usually the last word. Companies cannot offer remedies after its publication and their only recourse is to the Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT).

But last week, less than an hour after a US federal court ruled the deal could go ahead, the CMA said it could look again at a modified proposal. It later said a restructured deal could satisfy its concerns subject to a new investigation.

All sides applied for a two-month pause of the case at the CAT, which the CMA's lawyers said in court filings will "allow the CMA and the parties to engage swiftly and constructively in relation to Microsoft's proposals".

Microsoft's lawyers said in court filings that the CMA is "the critical impediment" to closing the deal and pausing the case would allow all sides to try and find a solution.

However, Judge Marcus Smith said he wanted to hear the lawyers on whether there was a "proper legal foundation" for the CMA to consider a modified deal.

The judge also asked whether the FTC's initial defeat in the US had been taken into consideration by the CMA.

Government Orders Probe on Edtech Firm Byju's Over Financial Issues

The corporate affairs ministry has ordered an inspection of the books of Byju's, a senior government official said on Monday amid the edtech major facing multiple headwinds, including delay in submitting financial statements and concerns over corporate governance issues.

The inspection of Bengaluru-based Think & Learn, which operates under the brand Byju's, will be carried out by the ministry, which is implementing the companies law.

The ministry decided to carry out the inspection after taking note of the developments, including that the company has been unable to finalise its financial statements and that its auditor has resigned, the official told PTI.

Earlier this month, the ministry asked the office of the Regional Director in Hyderabad to conduct an inspection of the company, which is registered in Bengaluru, the official said.

The official also said that further course of action will be decided after receiving the inspection report.

A query sent to Byju's seeking comments on the inspection remained unanswered.

Think & Learn Pvt Ltd was incorporated on November 30, 2011. The last Annual General Meeting of the company was held on September 19, 2022, as per data available with the ministry.

In recent months, the edtech major has been grappling with multiple issues, including concerns over its corporate governance practices.

Audit firm Deloitte resigned as an auditor of Byju's citing a delay in submitting financial statements while also simultaneously three of its board members resigned which indicated the deepening of the crisis at the edtech firm.

Deloitte Haskins & Sells, which was slated to audit Byju's until 2025, stepped down with "immediate effect" mid-term stating that "the financial statements of the company are long delayed." Last month, sources aware of the development said Byju's has committed to its investor to close the long-pending audit of the financial year 2022 by September and fiscal year 2023 by December.

In a call with shareholders last month, Byju's CEO Byju Raveendran admitted his past mistakes and assured shareholders that his learnings far outweigh any missteps.

Last week, the company said former SBI chief Rajnish Kumar and IT industry veteran T V Mohandas Pai will join its Advisory Council.
